About The Keeper

A late-blooming gardener and a curmudgeon-in-training, toiling in Zone 6A in the outer regions of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

I gardened in my twenties and then put it off as children (and time) made it difficult to manage. A few years ago, as the last nestling flew off to college, I chose between golf and gardening as my renewed hobby. I selected the latter. (I confess to watching Tiger though.)

I’d like to be a master gardener with my ultimate goal to be a Jedi Master Gardener. I could move stones in my garden just by using the Force. And I could deter chipmunks and voles from coming into the garden as their minds are weak and susceptible to Jedi mind games. Of course, that wouldn’t work on slugs who are obviously direct descendants of Jabba the Hutt.

I’ve learned much but understand that I know little. The garden allows me to grow… and not just the plants. I like to laugh but do it infrequently. My health issues have worn me down so I don’t get as much done as I would like. But when the air is warm and the sun is shining, the garden is a wonderful place to work and think.

The title comes from “As You like It”, Act II, scene I:

“And this our life, exempt from public haunt,

Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,

Sermons in stones, and good in every thing.”

  1. The name of my company is GardenKeeper. When did you pick this name for your alias? Have you seen my product? It has been on the market for eight years.

  2. I would be interested in learning more about your product but — no, I haven’t seen it. The story is much more mundane. I played soccer since I was 17 (the late Jurassic period) and was a goalkeeper, noted on scoresheets as “GK”. I had sneakers, cleats and athletic apparel with this notation. When I got into gardening a few years ago, I became a “garden keeper” and continued to wear the GK clothing.

  3. Hi GK – I thought you might check out a “Wikipedia for gardeners” sort of a site. It’s got thousands of plant articles, and anyone can edit them. Maybe you can contribute some of your expertise?

You can also add a plant search box to your site – which your visitors might enjoy:

    Best, Raffi
